Iman Opens Up About How She Still Feels “Married” To David Bowie 5 Years After His Death

Becoming a widow is one of the hardest things anyone could go through. Losing a spouse is devastating, especially when you were together over two decades and share a daughter together.

That’s right, we’re talking about supermodel Iman, who lost her husband, actor David Bowie, in 2016 after complications from his cancer diagnosis arose. The two were together for 26 years and shared what Iman refers to as an “epic romance.” It was shattering when he passed, but she says by no means does that mean she’s any less married to him.

Though it’s been five years, Iman says she still considers David her husband, and even refers to herself as still being married. “There are days that are harder than others but the memories are not all sad of why the person isn’t here. The memories are now of how great it was,” Iman said in an interview with People. “Sometimes I have to remind myself that I had 26 years. So I have that to sustain me.”

In fact, she feels so strongly about her connecting to David that she never plans to remarry. When her daughter, Alexandria “Lexi” Jones, now 21, asked her about getting married again one day, Iman firmly stated that she “will not.” Why? “I still feel married,” she said. “Someone a few years ago referred to David as my late husband and I said ‘No, he’s not my late husband. He’s my husband.'”

Of course, even though she still considers herself married, David isn’t physically in this world, which puts quite the limit on their relationship. However, Iman swears she can feel him around her, even all this time later. It’s especially apparent during one of his favorite times of the day.

“I definitely feel his presence, especially when I look out over the glorious sunsets at our home because David loves sunsets,” Iman said. “So in that way he is ever present.”

The two shared such a special bond. He was so supportive over everything she did, and the two shared quite the physical connection, too. “David was beyond handsome,” Iman says. “He oozed charisma.”

“If David was not in my life, I don’t know if I would have had the courage to start Iman Cosmetics [in 1994]” she says. “I asked him ‘What if it fails?’ and he said, ‘If you don’t try, you’ll never know if it succeeds.’ He was very proud that it was one of the first lines to be very inclusive. Very chuffed, as he would say. Pleasantly happy.”
