About Us
A Great Tip Can Make All the Difference…
We have all come across great tips that turn a difficult job into an easy one, that save us money, and that save us time and headaches. Great tips make our lives a little easier. So in 2008, we started TipHero to serve as an encyclopedia of all the ingenious tips we learned about from family, friends and across the web. In the early days, we focused primarily on money saving tips. In 2010, Kiplinger’s Magazine named TipHero the best money saving blog on the internet. Over the years we have expanded our editorial footprint, covering tips from a wide variety of subjects, from cleaning and cooking to safety and survival. Our mission is to make your life a little easier by providing you with great tips.
Meet the Team:
Kira Troilo, Managing Editor
Kira is the Managing Editor of TipHero. She joined the team back in April 2010 when she realized that her passion for writing/editing, curiosity for finding clever tips, and her love of bargain hunting could go hand in hand. She graduated from Emerson College in Boston with a BFA in Writing, Literature and Publishing. In her free time, Kira pursues her other passions: singing and dancing. She stays very involved in the local musical theater scene in the Boston area, both onstage as a performer and behind the scenes as a choreographer and director. But more than anything in the world (except maybe her husband, Jared) Kira loves cheese. Wine and cheese, grilled cheese, mac & cheese, you name it. All cheese and any cheese. She currently lives in Medford, MA.
Nick Owsley, Contributor
Nick helped start TipHero in 2008. Some of his favorite tips include a fast and easy way to cook and husk corn, a fast and easy way to deseed a pomegranate, and how to use Priceline to save on hotels. Nick is originally from the Baltimore/Washington area, went to college in Vermont, and now lives in the Boston area (and has learned to “accept” the professional New England sports teams to the point where he now happily jumps on the bandwagon when they’re playoff-bound).
Ray Hibbard, Contributor
Ray helped start TipHero in 2008. His favorite tips are frugal money-saving tips like how to make a white board for only $10 and 13 things that can cut your monthly expenses. Ray’s a bit of a globetrotter, always looking for a good excuse to dust off his passport. His favorite international destinations to date are: Dublin, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Barcelona, and London. He’s looking forward to checking out Brazil and Nicaragua next. Ray grew up and lives in always-sunny Portland, OR ;)
Lauren von Hagel, Editor
Lauren recently joined the TipHero team and is excited to explore and share her love of baking, coupons, cheese, and cooking, decorating and traveling while spending as little money as possible. A transplant to the Boston area from Maryland, Lauren holds an MFA in Creative Writing from University of Massachusetts-Boston and a BFA in Writing, Literature and Publishing from Emerson College, and spends her time not looking for deals writing short stories, novels and poems. She currently lives and looks for tips in Dorchester.
Tessa Newell, Contributor
Tessa is a contributing writer for TipHero and is thrilled to share her love of all things food, fashion and, of course, frugalness. Growing up in her hometown of Middlebury, Connecticut, Tessa was always a bit obsessive about saving and spending money wisely and couldn’t be happier to share this obsession with TipHero readers. Tessa now lives and writes in Sturbridge, Massachusetts where she hoards an obnoxiously large collection of scarves, sings very loudly and searches for any and all tips and tricks to make life a little easier.
Deanna Weiss, Contributor
Deanna is a new addition to the TipHero team. Most recently, she repatriated back to the U.S. after living in Seoul, South Korea where she worked as an English teacher. She earned her BA in Drama from San Francisco State University in 2010, and has been part of creative pursuits ever since. In the fall of 2016, Deanna embarked on a new chapter in her life, living as a digital nomad. She works remotely from wherever she is in the world at any given time. She loves traveling, trying weird foods, and horror movies.
