Teacher Threatens To Leave Kids Out of the Class Christmas Party If They Don’t Bring Food

It’s the holiday season and winter break from school is quickly approaching or has already started (depending on where your kids go to school). While a break from school is almost always something that kids look forward to, there are also certain festive activities that kids look forward to before the break begins.

Many schools have some type of holiday party. Often these parties involve food, a game or craft that’s festive or winter-related and maybe even a gift exchange. It seems like it would go without question that all of the children in the class would be involved in the holiday party.

One teacher sent home a simple note to parents informing them that their child was supposed to bring a particular type of food to the holiday party. That seems alright, but we also know that things can get hectic in the morning before school. It could be very easy for a parent to forget to send the food item to school with the child.

What happens if the child forgets to bring food to the party? Nothing, right? They should still get to participate in the party and share the other food. One teacher didn’t think so, and she told parents as much.

In the note, the teacher circled a sentence in orange highlighter. The sentence read, “My philosophy is: if they don’t bring anything they don’t eat anything.”

Wow. Just wow.

One parent shared the note on Facebook, and it has gotten a lot of attention. In fact, the letter got so much attention, and the school got so much negative feedback from parents about the situation that the superintendent sent home her own letter.

The superintendent wrote, “I want to assure our families and students that all students will participate and no students will be made to feel uncomfortable if they don’t bring refreshments.”

That’s a relief. We don’t know any details about what happened with the teacher, but at least we know all the kids will get to participate in the school’s party.

How would you react if you got a letter like the one this teacher sent home? Are your kids expected to bring food to a holiday party at school?
