Jane Fonda Opens Up About Finally Embracing Grey Hair At Age 83

As women get older, we’re often told to use anti-wrinkle cream or dye our hair black—anything to make us look younger, right?

But in recent times, more and more, women are embracing their old age rather than trying to be something they aren’t. For example, model Paulina Porizkova and actress Sarah Jessica Parker have both decided to embrace their silver roots and have no interest in trying to look younger.

“Aging women have been nearly erased from the media, leaving those of us who want to, or try or would at least try to embrace it – without much representation,” Porizkova said.

And now, 83-year-old Jane Fonda has joined the grey hair train. She recently told Ellen DeGeneres in an interview that she was through with changing up her natural hair color as often as she was.

“I tell you, I’m so happy I let it go gray,” she said. “Enough already with so much time wasted, so much money spent, so many chemicals—I’m through with that.”

The Grace and Frankie star has donned all different kinds of hair colors over the years, but we have to say: She looks stunning as a grey—or should we say silver? Her hairstylist Jack Martin took 7 hours to turn her hair into the new color from her iconic blonde locks.

“Her goal color was a silver icy blonde to surprise everyone at the 2020 Oscars,” he said, referring to last year when she began her journey into gray hair.

In addition to going gray, Fonda also announced she was done buying new clothes as of several years ago. “You see this coat? I needed something red and I went out and found this coat on sale. This is the last article of clothing that I will ever buy,” she had said during a 2019 protest on Capitol Hill.

It seems like she’s stayed true to her word. As someone who has big feelings on climate change, for big events, Fonda chooses to wear recycled outfits.

“I prefer this kind of outfit than getting dressed up,” Fonda said. “We spend too much money, we buy too many things, and then we get rid of them. We try to develop our identity by shopping, right? We gotta stop that—stop all this consumerism.”

So much wisdom! She’s certainly had a long career behind her. Hear her break down her career in the video below.

We think Fonda looks great with her new locks. What are your thoughts on embracing your natural hair color, even as you age?
