Family Dollar Employees in Nebraska Walk Off the Job After Citing Low Pay and Long Shifts

Even if you enjoy a particular job, chances are you’d be tempted to quit if the working conditions were bad enough. We’re talking about dealing with things like working twice as long as you expected while having to do tasks you weren’t hired to do. Throw in the fact that the bathroom doesn’t work and the air conditioning doesn’t work during the middle of summer. Sounds unpleasant, doesn’t it?

At a Family Dollar store in Nebraska, multiple employees quit including all but one of the store’s cashiers and assistant managers. Reportedly, they all quit because of issues with the manager. The manager also quit. According to Breanna Faeller, the store’s last remaining assistant manager, the problems started about three or four months ago.

Faeller told FOX5 that it was nearly impossible to hire employees. She explained, “We couldn’t keep any cashiers hired because they only made $10 an hour and it definitely wasn’t worth the pay for everything we had to expect them to do. They are only supposed to work up to 20 hours a week and they were working 35-40.”

When Faeller did hire someone, he or she would often quit after just a few days. In one case, she remembers an employee going to the bathroom and never coming back.

Faeller had been working an average of 11 hours a day every day of the week. To make it worse, the store didn’t have a working bathroom or air conditioning.

Fast forward to this past Sunday, and Faeller and the only remaining cashier were both at work. They decided they’d had enough of these horrible working conditions. They wrote a note that read, “We all quit. Sorry for the inconvenience.” They put the note on the store’s door and left.

Faeller explained that she will miss talking to some of the regular customers, but she feels that quitting was the right thing to do. She said that after quitting “I had no more stress wondering if I was going to be the only one working that day. I felt horrible at the same time, I had a lot of regular customers that I enjoyed talking to every day but I just couldn’t do it anymore.”

A couple days later, the store reopened. The store is reportedly being run by employees from other Family Dollar stores who are filling in until new employees are hired.

What do you think Family Dollar should do to improve the working environment? Have you ever worked somewhere where the working environment was so bad that you just had to quit?
