Bride Causes Uproar After Banning Groom’s 98-Year-Old Grandmother from Wedding Reception
We’ve heard horror stories about many bridezillas. Often the people complaining are in the wedding party. For example, a bridesmaid may decide not to be in the wedding after being given a long list of what is and is not acceptable. Other bridesmaids are even required to pay for things far beyond just their bridesmaid dress. Basically, some brides think the wedding is 100% about the bride and that everyone should drop everything and happily do what she says.
One thing we had not heard until now was a bride banning certain relatives from the wedding reception. When we picture a wedding reception we picture a big party full of friends and family. For one bride that’s exactly what she wants, but she wants it to be an adults-only party, and she also doesn’t want any elderly relatives. In particular, she doesn’t want the groom’s 98-year-old grandmother at the wedding reception.
This bride and groom have gotten into a huge argument about whether or not the grandmother should be at the reception, so the bride turned to Reddit to find out who is right and who is wrong. She explained that the grandmother is invited “to the ceremony but not the reception. It will be extremely loud and I want it to be a party atmosphere, and she will be extremely out of place.” She added, “For context, none of my grandparents are still alive, and he still has his last living grandmother.”
You might be wondering if anybody bothered to ask the grandmother if she thinks she would enjoy the loud party at the reception, and the answer is yes. Yes, the groom asked her if she would feel comfortable at the reception, and yes, she wants to go to the reception. According to the bride, the grandmother “has always dreamed about being at her grandson’s wedding.”
That answer isn’t good enough for the bride. She wrote, “I just know it will inevitably lead to us dealing with her and taking care of her, and I just want to get drunk and let loose with my friends.” Now the groom and his grandmother are both upset with the bride.
What do Reddit users think of this situation? They think the bride is wrong and a complete bridezilla. Some even think the groom should consider this situation a huge red flag and call off the wedding. One Reddit user wrote, “You’re hearing the love of your life say this is important. You’re hearing someone really important to your partner say this is important. And you’re putting getting drunk ahead of that? FFS. She’s been a grown adult longer than you’ve been alive – I’m pretty sure she can handle any tiredness and noise as she wishes. If I was your partner I’d be noticing the red flags.”
Another comment reads, “Also, you’re treating an elderly person like a child – like a burden. That’s so demeaning.”
Yet another Reddit user added, “She’s not a kid and you won’t have to take care of her. Honestly this would be enough for me to call the wedding off. Get over yourself.”
Do you think the groom should call off the wedding? Do you think the grandmother will feel out of place at the reception?
