Sometimes scammers are sneaky. They say or do things to try to trick people into giving them money, for example, by pretending they need it for an emergency or pretending the person they are targeting knows someone who is in trouble.

Scammers also try to target people who they think will fall for their scams, such as elderly people who might have extra money and might easily believe their lies.

When a scammer called a grandma named Jean, they didn’t know who they were messing with. This former 911 operator is no stranger to dealing with people on the phone who are in emergency situations, and she immediately knew that the person who called her was telling her lies.

The phone rang, and Jean answered it. The person on the other end of the line called her “grandma.” He pretended to be her grandson and said that he had been in a car accident. He claimed he was in jail and charged with drunk driving. He added that he needed money for bail.

Jean knew it was a scam, but instead of hanging up the phone, she decided to play along with the scammer. That led to a series of phone calls. During a follow up phone call from someone pretending to be her grandson’s attorney, Jean was told that her grandson needed $8000 for bail, and she agreed to pay it. She told the scammer that someone could come to her house to get the cash.

Jean made her dialogue with the scammer believable. She explained, “I played stupid grandma. ‘Oh my poor grandson,’ I told the guy. ‘Please don’t tell his mother.'”

She was surprised when the scammer actually fell for her scam and agreed to come to her house to get the bail money. Meanwhile, Jean called the police to tell them what was going on.

Jean’s son wasn’t too happy about how she tricked a scammer. He thought it would’ve been better if she just hung up the phone. He said, “I couldn’t believe what was going on. I told her to stop, stop.”

Jean has no regrets about her decision and is proud of the fact that she was able to help the police catch a scammer. She said, “Bored grandma: one. Bad guy: zero.”
