A vacation to a tropical island is supposed to be a relaxing change from everyday life. We who live in the United States are used to a fast past, working more hours than some in other countries, and when we finally do take a vacation, we hope to truly enjoy it.

A vacation to a place like the Bahamas sounds like a dream. Turquoise water. White sand beaches. Water sports. Cocktails. It would truly be a refreshing break from the fast pace of life. One popular vacation spot in the Bahamas is the resort Sandals Emerald Bay.

Unfortunately, not every vacation goes as expected, and sometimes tragedy occurs. For several American tourists staying at Sandals Emerald Bay, what started out as a great vacation ended up in a mysterious tragedy. With hardly any warning, three people died and one was injured. They were all American tourists. Two of them were husband and wife, 68-year-old Michael Phillips and his 65-year-old wife, Robbie Phillips, who were both traveling from Tennessee. One of them was Vincent Paul Chiarella, a 64-year-old man from Florida. His wife Donna Chiarella also became sick, but so far has survived. She is currently in a hospital in Miami, Florida. Her condition is listed as “serious.”

During a press conference, Royal Bahamas Police Commissioner Paul Rolle explained that they are waiting on the results of the victims’ autopsies to determine the cause of death. He said, “The pathologist has extracted samples from all the patients and our forensic scientists have collected those samples for examination. We are actively engaging a lab in Philadelphia … to assist us with the expediting the toxicological examinations of all of these samples.”
