There’s a Tropical Island Where You Can Adopt a Puppy to Cuddle With on the Beach All Day for Free

There’s an island in the Caribbean that gives new meaning to the term “puppy love.” Should you decide to take a jaunt down to Turks & Caicos, you can jump on the opportunity to love on shelter puppies for the day.

Potcake Place is a non-profit dog rescue organization that takes in strays on the island of Providenciales. The group shelters anywhere from 50 to 70 dogs at a time but allows volunteers to spend time with a pup for a few hours a day.

It helps them to socialize with humans while also giving them a chance to get out and run around on the beach. The “potcakes” are a mixed breed common to the area generally made up of German Shepherd, Labrador, and Fox Terriers. The cute name originated from locals feeding the homeless dogs scraps from pots of food.

If you fall in love with one, Potcake Place will be happy to arrange an international adoption for the right candidates. The first step is to set up a meet-and-greet. Visitors to Providenciales who are interested in being a pup parent for the day will be matched up with a dog that best suits them.

All are supplied with food and other necessities for their potcake but the dogs can only be taken out for 2 hours at a time, and must be leashed. The program has been so popular that Potcake Place sometimes has lines forming over an hour before they open.

The dogs can be taken for walks on the beach, playtime, and of course, cuddlefests! Since Potcake Place opened in 2005, the volunteer-run organization has placed thousands of dogs in permanent homes. Locals and tourists – many vacationing from America – wind up taking them home.

Since the group is a non-profit and is staffed by unpaid volunteers, adoptions are essentially free but donations are requested and appreciated. Funds go towards veterinary care, food, collars, medicine, and other needs.

However, there is an application process in place for adoptions. Potential parents should be at least 25, and there is a lengthy questionnaire to ensure that people are willing to invest the time and care involved with having a dog.

Once someone is approved for an adoption, the shelter arranges the paperwork for the plane trip, shot records, and a puppy supply kit for adopters. Potcake Place is very diligent when it comes to placements, only adopting out animals that are healthy enough for travel or for moving into permanent digs.

Potcakes have been running around the island for about 100 years, breeding and for the most part, living on the streets. Some local residents help with fostering or feeding them, but most times, tourism is what helps these dogs have a shot at long lives.

Even if you can’t take your new adorable pooch home for adoption during your trip, Potcake Place also has couriers who will fly one to a new owner. They’ll meet you at the airport!

If you are planning a dream vacation sometime soon, then you may want to drop by this island for some R & R and TLC. You are almost guaranteed to find love here. Don’t believe us? Check out the video below!
