The show goes on! In the latest news regarding Amber Heard and ex-husband Johnny Depp’s defamation suit, Heard is planning to appeal the verdict.

On June 1, a jury in Fairfax, Virginia ruled that Heard was intentional and malicious in her defaming Depp in a 2018 Washington Post opinion article, where she claimed she was a domestic abuse victim. Depp was awarded $15 million before Judge Penney Azcarate reduced to about $10 million to be more in line with the state’s cap. Depp was initially suing for $50 million.

The jury did award Heard $2 million in compensatory damages for her counterclaim. After Depp’s lawyer said Heard’s allegations were false, Heard filed a $100 million countersuit against him. She testified that Depp physically and sexually assaulted her over a dozen times. However, Depp says the allegations are completely false and made up, and she had actually physically attached him on multiple occasions.

In saying that she was going to appeal the verdict, Heard said that her disappointment was “beyond words,” and that the verdict was a “setback” for women “to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated.”

“I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband,” she said in the statement. “I’m even more disappointed with what this verdict means for other women.”

“I’m sad I lost this case. But I am sadder still that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American — to speak freely and openly,” she added.

However Depp was thrilled by the verdict. “From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome,” he said. “Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that.

“Six years later, the jury gave me my life back,” he added.

Heard and Depp were married in 2015, but got divorced 15 months later with Heard citing domestic abuse and asking for a temporary restraining order. She has been very public since 2016 that Depp was physically abusive when they were together.
