2020’s Gerber Baby Is the First Adopted Baby Ever Chosen for the Campaign
If you know who Ann Turner Cook is, you’re probably a parent. Now 93, Cook was the original Gerber baby who appeared on the baby food brand’s marketing in 1928—yes, that’s that wide-eyed cute black and white baby on each and every jar of Gerber’s baby food.
Cook also inspired the company to search for a new Gerber baby each and every year, a tradition that many look forward to. Each year for the last decade, the brand holds an online annual contest where parents are encouraged to submit photos of their children, and Gerber chooses one lucky, smiley baby as the winner.
Well, 2020’s Gerber baby was just named, and she’s pretty special. Why? Little one-year-old Magnolia Earl, is the first Gerber spokesbaby ever who was adopted. “At Gerber, we have always recognized that every baby is a Gerber baby,” the company said in a statement. “In the 10 years we have hosted Photo Search, we have been proud to feature babies of diverse backgrounds. This year is no exception by featuring Magnolia, our first adopted Gerber Spokesbaby.”
Magnolia comes right after the year 18-month-old Lucas Warren was chosen as the Gerber spokesbaby, who made history as the first time Gerber has ever featured a baby with Down syndrome on their products.
“This is incredible,” said Magnolia’s mom, Courtney Earl. “It means that when people see our families, or if you see a family that doesn’t necessarily match, that you don’t have to question the belonging of anybody in that family.”
“Mommy always says a family is built on love,” said Magnolia’s dad, Russell Earl. “We may all look different, but we’re one family.”
The Earls have two older daughters who are also adopted, Whitney, 12, and Charlotte, 8.
