Here’s How This Adorable Baby Just Made History
If you’ve ever picked up a GERBER® baby food product, you’ve probably seen the classic black and white picture of a baby with wide eyes that’s all over their advertising. Heck, even if you haven’t ever picked up a can of their pureed butternut squash, that baby is recognizable.
That wide-eyed baby is a 5-month-old Anne Turner Cook. The photo was taken in 1928, when Gerber first decided to put a baby on their products. Anne is 91 today, and her photo is still one of the most familiar faces on a baby food product.
While Anne is still an iconic face for Gerber, each year, the brand holds an online annual contest to find a new Gerber Spokesbaby. Parents are prompted to submit photos of their children via Instagram and Gerber chooses one lucky, smiley baby as a the winner.
Well, this year, everyone was truly inspired by Gerber’s choice. The winner was 18-month-old Lucas Warren of Georgia, who was chosen from more than 140,000 applicants.
What’s unique about this situation? Lucas has Down syndrome, and this is the first time since the 1920s that Gerber has ever featured a baby with Down syndrome on their products.
“Lucas’ winning smile and joyful expression won our hearts this year, and we are all thrilled to name him our 2018 Spokesbaby,” Bill Partyka, president and CEO of Gerber, said in an official statement. “Every year, we choose the baby who best exemplifies Gerber’s longstanding heritage of recognizing that every baby is a Gerber baby, and this year, Lucas is the perfect fit.”
Her sure is—little Lucas’ contagious smile, twinkly eyes, and chunky cheeks are what his parents, Courtney and Jason Warren, say are the first things people notice about Lucas.
The winning photo shows Lucas cheesing up the camera in an adorable polka-dot bow tie. Once you see it, it’s hard to imagine any other baby winning.
Besides al the fame, as the winner, Lucas gets to be featured on all of Gerber social media—oh and he also gets $50,000, which his parents plan to put towards Lucas’ education.
His parents were in true disbelief and shock when they found out their son as the winner. They hope that Lucas looks back on it and is proud to have been the Gerber Spokesbaby of 2018.
“This is such a proud moment for us as parents knowing that Lucas has a platform to spread joy, not only to those he interacts with every day, but to people all over the country,” Courtney said in a statement. “We hope this opportunity sheds light on the special needs community and educates people that with acceptance and support, individuals with special needs have the potential to change the world—just like our Lucas!”
