Lost sheaths and naked blades are a part of life when it comes to knives. Even if you scout out the perfect case for your hunting or utility knife to keep it safe while you carry it, sometimes blade and covering get separated.

Toss one into your wilderness bag and it can come loose from its sheath. Knives deprived of a block wander aimlessly in a kitchen drawer. Unless you have a folding knife, storing it safely is a chief concern so you don’t get cut.

If you’re in a pinch, this unusual glue gun hack from Hack World could be for you.

It’s a DIY knife case made from hot glue! You’re so used to seeing glue guns used for craft projects that you’re missing out on its other cool uses. A hot glue sheath is hard to cut through, which can rescue your skin from a knife’s accidental pokes and cuts. Ouch.

Go grab a glue gun and check out the steps for this fun DIY sheath!

Hot Glue Knife Case

Materials

  • Knife
  • Hot glue gun

Instructions

  1. Prep the Work Area

Lay your knife on a sheet of wax paper to protect your work surface.

  2. Glue A Side

On one side, spread a layer of hot glue on the knife’s blade, using a back and forth motion. Let it dry.

  3. Flip It and Repeat

Flip the knife over, repeat on the other side. Shoot a covering of glue on the knife’s spine. Allow to dry.

  4. Slide it Out

Once the entire casing is dry, you should be able to slide the knife in and out of it.

Watch this quick tutorial below to see how this case is jazzed up in its final steps. Glue gun aficionados suggest smearing each side of the knife with Vaseline first to prevent sticking. Follow that step up with the hot glue process. A case that’s molded to your blade will fit like a glove and form insulation from dirt and moisture.

Folks, you don’t have to use this on your kitchen knives, expensive chef cutlery, or the Samurai sword you’re trying to protect from dust, scratches, and the elements.

What this case is awesome for is if you need a functional covering for a toolbox full of loose knives, camping knives, a cool prop for a costume party, or your cosplay goals. Just think of all the different colors you could paint these, and how you’ll be the envy of all your fellow cosplayers with your ornate gold dagger sheath.

But hang on a moment. There is another sharp object you can strike up a sheath for: a pair of scissors. Rather than leave your shears exposed, apply a thick coat of hot glue to both sides of them, creating a protective case. This is handy for keeping tiny human fingers safe from harm.

What do you think of this hot glue project? Would you try it? How many naked knives do you have sitting around that could use a covering?
