This year has been strange and difficult in so many ways for so many people. It must be especially difficult to be a child right now. It has to be hard to not completely understand what’s going on and just know that you can’t do a lot of the things that you used to be able to do.

For example, I used to take my kids to the playground at our local park every weekend. We would walk there, and they would end up meeting some new friends and playing together. It was simple and normal childhood fun. Now, playgrounds are roped off where I live, and playing a game like tag would be a huge no-no with social distancing. It’s almost impossible for kids to make new friends right now.

About one of the only outlets little kids have for their endless energy is going for walks and bike rides around the neighborhood. No, going for a walk is not nearly the same as playing on monkey bars and going down a slide at a neighborhood park, but at least it’s something.

YouTuber CanyonChasers has a security camera outside his front door, and that camera captures whatever happens in his driveway and on the sidewalk, that includes capturing anyone that walks by his house.

He shared, “Every night I would get an alert from my driveway security camera, and at first I was a bit annoyed, but then I found myself looking forward to the evening alert.  And then inspiration struck, in the form of my wife giving me this great idea.   What transpired has turned into the best part of an otherwise dreary pandemic summer.”

Someone was trespassing in his driveway, and as he explains, at first he was annoyed. Then, his wife had an idea, and it ended up being the best idea of the their summer.

Who was trespassing? A little boy who was out for a walk with his mother. Actually, in his case, it looks like he’s riding his bike. Every night, the little boy would ride his bike around the empty driveway. Then, one night, something was different.

Watch the video below to see security camera footage of this little boy and how everything changed (for the better) one night.

This was an amazing and thoughtful idea. It reminds us of how some people have drawn hop scotch and kind words on the sidewalks. It doesn’t take much to make something ordinary extraordinary for a child.
