The Roseanne Spinoff is Officially Happening — Here’s the New Title and What We Know So Far About the Next Season

After the controversy surrounding Roseanne Barr and her self-titled TV show made waves, fans were on the fence upon hearing it was canceled. It’s been over a month since ABC announced their decision to ax it, but some are holding out hope.

When the reboot hit the air, it was a huge ratings success, but at times the show’s episodes divided viewers. Roseanne’s personal views and comments on social media is what ultimately led to its ending, but fans have been pulling for the rest of the cast and crew to keep things going.

A reboot of a reboot? It’s happening, folks. ABC has greenlit a spinoff of Roseanne without the lead character. Its working title is The Conners, and the show will revolve around the remaining characters, including Dan Conner and Aunt Jackie.

In order for ABC to move forward with their decision, they wanted to be considerate of how they could do things without Barr being attached to it financially or artistically. An agreement was reached with the former star that has made it possible for the show to continue about the Conner family, without any of her involvement.

She will have no attachment to the new season. With the exception of Barr’s departure, The Conners will air this fall with the same cast, crew, and writers for a total of 10 episodes. Producers pitched the idea to the network weeks after the cancellation, and with the support of fans, were able to make their case.

As quickly as Roseanne premiered, was renewed, and then was canceled, it remains to be seen how well this spinoff will perform with the show’s core audience. According to a press release from ABC:

“After a sudden turn of events, the Conners are forced to face the daily struggles of life in Lanford in a way they never have before. This iconic family . . .grapples with parenthood, dating, an unexpected pregnancy, financial pressures, aging and in-laws in working-class America.”

Reactions to the news have been mixed, with some fans being just as excited as the returning cast, but others skeptical of the show being any good without its matriarch. As for the remaining cast members, they are excited to get back to work.

When the fallout from Barr’s racist tweet hit the world, her co-stars were quick to denounce her views and comments. It caused a rift between the comedian and members of the cast, with her saying they threw her under the bus.

This past season saw the Conner family tackle disagreements about politics, lifestyles, and parenting, with many of the episodes courting controversy. For viewers of the new show, it could be interesting to see how Roseanne’s disappearance is handled and the way it impacts the rest of the family.

There may or may not be an entirely different tone to the show. We’ll just have to wait and see, but for now check out this video to learn more!

Will you watch the spinoff? Do you think it will be a success or a flop? What are your thoughts on the show’s new direction?
