“Roseanne” Might See a Second Season After All — Just Without Roseanne Herself

Were you totally distraught when you found out ABC decided to cancel the Roseanne reboot? We know we were—but we can totally understand where the decision to take it off the air came from.

If you hadn’t heard, Roseanne Barr, the star of the recent series, recently wrote an inappropriate tweet on her Twitter account referencing Valerie Jarrett, an African-American woman who was a senior adviser to Barack Obama throughout his presidency. Roseanne wrote in the tweet if the “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.”

The racist tweet went viral, and, though Roseanne apologized and deleted the tweet, ABC went ahead and canceled the show on the spot.

“On behalf of all the writers and producers, we worked incredibly hard to create an amazing show,” the series showrunner Bruce Helford had said in a statement. “I was personally horrified and saddened by the comments and in no way do they reflect the values of the people who worked so hard to make this the iconic show that it is.”

Note his words: That even though Roseanne wrote these horrific words, it doesn’t mean the rest of the cast members feel the same way. So why should they be punished for something one person did? After all, 200+ people lost their jobs from a tweet that they essentially had nothing to do with.

ABC has recently realized this—and is currently discussing the possibility of putting Roseanne back on the air, just without Roseanne. The focus of the show would then be switched to focus on character Darlene (Sara Gilbert) or Dan (John Goodman) instead of Roseanne.

ABC is reportedly in preliminary talks with the Roseanne production company Carsey-Warner to see if they can make that happen. This, of course, is not an easy decision to make. After all, the show is called “Roseanne,” and has always centered around Roseanne herself. Producers aren’t sure if this would upset die-hard Roseanne fans to suddenly change the entire premise of the show.

Additionally, because Barr had a “significant financial stake” in the show, according to Variety, ABC might be required to pay Roseanne if they continued the show with her (possibly in the form of a buyout). One thing’s for sure—the cast members certainly do not support Roseanne in what she did and think ABC made a suitable decision.

“Roseanne’s recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show. I am disappointed in her actions, to say the least,” said Sara Gilbert, who plays Darlene, in a statement. “This is incredibly sad and difficult for all of us, as we’ve created a show that we believe in, are proud of, and that audiences love— one that is separate and apart from the opinions and words of one cast member.”

We’re so curious if Roseanne is going to continue without the old star. Would you watch the (second) reboot of Roseanne if ABC decided to put it back on the air without Roseanne? Do you think all those people should have lost their jobs because of something Roseanne did? What do you think the right decision here is?
