Royal wedding plans are well underway for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who are set to get hitched on May 19 this spring. Excited royal watchers are wondering about each detail like the cake, the dress, and who will be part of the wedding party.
As guesses about the bridal party abound, speculation on who will be Prince Harry’s best man is also prevalent. While it’s assumed that Prince William will be fulfilling that role for his little brother, he recently admitted that Prince Harry hasn’t even asked him yet.
Participating in a discussion with members of Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), the duke opened up about his close relationship with his brother. CALM is an organization that works to provide mental health services to prevent suicides among men.
CALM’s newly launched “Best Man Project” aims to highlight the importance of male friendships and supporting one another through tough times. The group chose the name to demonstrate how a best man is the right-hand of the groom, on hand to do what he can for him.
Prince William was present during the meeting, as well as others like Rio Ferdinand and Roman Kemp, to talk about the meaning of being a best man or best mate. Of course, he mentioned Prince Harry and how he’s his “best mate”:
“Losing our mother at a young age, it’s helped us travel through that difficult patch together. You’re like-minded. You go through similar things, it’s a bond and it’s something you know you’ve tackled together and come out better for it.
That’s the thing about being a best mate, inevitable one of you is sometimes on an up while the other is on a down. You’re always there for each other and repaying that favor.”
When Roman Kemp asked about being Prince Harry’s best man and other friendships, Prince William joked, “He hasn’t asked me yet, just to clear that up. It could be a sensitive subject.”
Laughing, he was referring to the wedding being on the same day as the FA Cup Final and his role as president of the football association. He assured them he was still working out the scheduling kinks.
Though traditionally royal grooms have “supporters” rather than a best man, Prince William deviated from that norm by having his brother serve as his best man. It’s thought that Prince Harry will do the same thing.
Given that many men in the royal family have all gotten married with their brothers as groomsmen, Prince Harry will probably eventually get around to tapping his bro. After all, someone has to plan his stag party/weekend. If it’s not Prince William, the other person we think would be the perfect best man is Prince George!
Time chatting with other men at CALM’s gave Prince William an opportunity to speak candidly about brotherhood and how important it is to reach out when help is needed. They’ve each been in one another’s corner forever. To find out about more Prince William’s charity work and his thoughts on being a “best man” click on the video from ITN News below.
