When we’re in a rush to get somewhere, it can be hard not to get a little annoyed at someone who cuts you off or is traveling just a bit under the speed limit. And sure, sometimes some of us even get a little road rage, whether it’s spouting curses out the window or stepping on the gas just a bit harder.

The problem is, road rage contributes to about 30 deaths a year—especially when it’s an extreme case, like that of a man named Eric Popper.

Seemingly, in a fit of rage, Popper had cut off someone else driving near him. That driver, of course, got annoyed and started to honk and tailgate Popper close behind. He even went so far as to throw something out of his window at Popper’s car as he passed him.

That’s when the unthinkable happened. Popper reached into his center console and pulled out a handgun, quickly firing dozens of shots through his window at the car.

The incident occurred during the morning rush in Miami, Florida last June. The footage was only released after Popper turned himself in and his dashcam video was given to police. He is currently facing two felony charges that may land him up to 15 years in prison. His hearing will be in April.

Popper said that the reason he began to shoot was that he thought the other driver was firing shots at him and that it was a matter of self-defense. However, the other driver was not found to be armed.

“He pulled out his gun in self defense and was justified in pulling out his gun,” Popper’s attorney Robert Gershman said.

Fortunately, no one was hurt or injured in the incident. But that’s not always the case. Road rage is a serious problem, affecting a majority of people. According to a 2019 stat from AAA, almost 80 percent of drivers have shown some type of aggression while driving at least one time in the past 30 days.

“Your road rage is serious and can lead to both criminal and civil charges being filed against you,” attorney Areva Martin said.

We’re glad no one was injured in Popper’s incident, but it’s indeed a harrowing scene to watch. Viewer beware before you watch the following footage of Popper shooting at his road rage opponent below.
