When a musician is on stage, it’s easy to think that he or she isn’t paying all that much attention to what’s going on in the crowd besides listening to the cheers. Sure, the lights can be blinding and the musician is most likely focusing on his or her performance, but the musician is still human and is often still attune to what is going on around him or her.

This isn’t always the case, like in the recent tragedy at the Astroworld Festival in Houston. Travis Scott was performing, and he had no idea something was wrong in the crowd until he saw an ambulance drive into the venue. At that point, he paused, but it was too late for a brief pause to save a life.

Fortunately, some musicians are able to see what’s going on in the crowd, and when they stopped their performance, it did prevent a potential tragedy. Here are 15 examples.

1. Panic! At The Disco

   In 2014, the band was performing at The House of Blues in Boston when vocalist Brendan told the band to stop. A woman in the crowd was having a seizure. He asked the crowd to make room so the medics could get to her.

2. Nirvana

   In 1993, Kurt Cobain stopped performing mid-song when he saw a man trying to assault a woman in the crowd.

3. Billie Eilish

   During a show in 2018, she heard someone in the crowd say that someone had passed out. She stopped performing and went to get her water bottle as a way to help the fan. Then she started asking other people if they were okay and offered water bottles other fans who thought they might pass out too..

4. Adele

   In 2011, Adele stopped mid-performance by shouting “Stop” when she noticed that a fan had fainted. She paused her performance until medical professionals had gotten to and helped the fan.

5. Foo Fighters

   In 2011, singer Dave Grohl stopped mid-song and started cussing out a fan. The fan was trying to start a fight, and he wouldn’t stand for it.

6. Fall Out Boy

   In 2014, the band noticed that a girl looked like she needed help. She was having a seizure. The band didn’t resume their performance until after the girl got the help she needed.

7. A$ap Rocky

   In 2019, the rapper noticed that someone was on the floor. He stopped the show and asked the crowd to make room.

8. Harry Styles

   In 2019, Harry Styles noticed that a fan didn’t look like she was feeling okay. She passed out, and he asked the crowd to make room and point at her so the medical personnel could get to her quickly.

9. Logic

   In 2017, Rapper Logic stopped a concert when he noticed that a fan had fainted. The staff ended up giving everyone in the concert water. Logic told the crowd this happens all the time. He told the crowd to make sure they stay hydrated.

10. Lady Gaga

    Lady Gaga once stopped a concert because she noticed that a woman in the crowd was bleeding. She had been hit. Gaga promised the woman that she would get her help.

11. Slipknot

    In 2019, fans were getting squished together trying to get close to the stage, and Corey Taylor noticed. He stopped the concert and said he wouldn’t continue until the fans took a step back and listened to him.

12. Niall Horan

    In 2018, Niall Horan saw that his fans were getting too squished together trying to get close to the stage. He stopped the concert and told everyone to step back for their own safety.

13. Shinedown

    In 2015, Brent Smith held up his hand, and the music stopped. Then he asked for the lights to be turned on. A man in the crowd had passed out. He didn’t resume the concert until medics took the man safely out of the crowd.

14. Yungblud

    At a concert in Dallas, the performer stopped between songs to ask a girl in the crowd if she was alright. Then he addressed the crowd telling them not to push on the girls in front.

15. Playboi Carti

    Staff at a Playboi Carti concert alerted the performer that people were passing out. He stopped his performance and asked everyone to step back 3 feet.
