There is almost always some sort of drama leading up to a wedding. Sometimes the stress of planning the big day gets to the bride so much that she becomes a bridezilla making ridiculous demands of her wedding party and guests. Other times, there are less dramatic disagreements about important decisions like seating charts and bridesmaids dresses.

After stepping down as senior members of the royal family, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sat down with Oprah Winfrey to discuss their experience as senior royals. One of the topics Markle addressed with the reported spat between Markle and her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, before the wedding.

News sources had previously reported that Markle made Middleton cry, but Markle claimed the opposite happened. She claimed Middleton was the one who made her cry. She told Winfrey, “There wasn’t a confrontation. I don’t think it’s fair to her to get into the details because she apologized, and I’ve forgiven her. It was a really hard week of the wedding and she was upset about something, but she owned it, and she apologized, and she brought me flowers and a note, apologizing.” She added that the media “really seemed to want a narrative of a hero and a villain.”

While Markle claimed that she forgave her sister-in-law for making her cry, she also seemed to paint herself as the victim in the story. According to investigative journalist Tom Bower’s book “Revenge,” Markle’s story is not true.

In Bower’s book, he claims that Markle was the one who made Middleton cry. He also explains in more detail what the disagreement was all about – Princess Charlotte’s flower girl dress.

According to Bower’s book, during a dress fitting, Markle and Middleton disagreed about the hemline of Charlotte’s flower girl dress. Markle reportedly also compared Charlotte “unfavorably to her best friend Jessica Mulroney’s daughter” Isabell. The final straw, the incident that according to Bower made Middleton cry, was about tights.

Following protocol, Middleton thought that bridesmaids and Charlotte as the flower girl “should wear tights” at the wedding. Markle did not. According to Bower, Mulroney and Mulroney’s mom sided with Markle during the disagreement.

Bower’s account seems to back up the Tatler report of the incident that was published back in 2020. According to a friend of Prince Williams and Middleton who spoke to Tatler, “It was a hot day and apparently there was a row over whether the bridesmaids should wear tights or not. Kate, following protocol, felt that they should. Meghan didn’t want them to.”

At the time, Kennsington Palace responded to the Tatler report denying any disagreement between Middleton and Markle.

Do you believe that Markle made Middleton cry or that Middleton made Markle cry? Do you think it’s possible that they both ended up crying? Does it surprise you that the disagreement was over whether or not to wear tights?
