Jane Fonda Rocked a Gray Hair Look and Rewore a Red Dress from 2014 to the 2020 Oscars

For normal people, wearing the same outfit more than once is typical, normal and expected. Sure, there may be exceptions to the rule. For example, a prom dress or wedding dress may only be worn once, but those are exceptions.

For celebrities, different rules apply. First of all, they need more fancy clothes than most people, what with all the awards shows and film festivals they attend. And, of course, they’re always being asked “who are you wearing” while they walk down the red carpet.

What’s uncommon is to see a celebrity wear the same outfit twice. This applies to both men and women. We can expect to see a whole bunch of brand new dresses and tuxedos on the red carpet.

Perhaps times are changing. Jane Fonda had the honor of announcing the award for Best Picture at the 2020 Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood. She looked stunning in a red dress, a red coat slung over her shoulder, gold jewelry and a gray pixie haircut. But, there’s more to this story than what she wore.

Fonda was making a statement with her attire. First of all, why was she carrying a coat? This coat is quite significant. She bought it in 2019, and she announced to a crowd of people that this red coat would be the very last piece of clothing that she would ever buy.

Fonda is an environmental activist, and she regularly protests on Fridays during what’s known as Fire Drill Fridays. She needed something red to wear to the protests, thus the need for the red coat.

What about the rest of her ensemble? The dress was from her closet. She originally wore it back in 2014 to the 67th Cannes Film Festival. The jewelry was from Pomellato. She chose this brand of jewelry because they use “responsible, ethically harvested gold and sustainable diamonds.”

Fonda is during more than just talking the talk about sustainability. She’s walking the walk…even at the Academy Awards.

Fonda wasn’t the only one who dug an outfit out of the closet. Joaquin Phoenix, who took home the award for Best Actor, wore the same tuxedo that he has worn to every awards show this season.
