Florida Waitress Hailed a Hero After Helping 11-Year-Old Boy Escape from Abusive Home

When some people go to work they simply do their job; however, there are other people who show up for work and end up becoming heroes. For example, one delivery driver ended up saving an older man from a burning home. Then there is the police officer who led the mob at the Capitol Building away from the Senate Chamber.

Flavaine Carvalho is a server at Mrs. Potato Restaurant on South Kirkman Road in Orlando, Florida. New Year’s Day was supposed to be her day off, but she worked that day anyway. It’s a good thing she did because her quick-thinking and brave actions potentially saved a young boy’s life.

There was a family sitting at one of her tables that included a mom, a dad and an 11-year-old boy. Everyone at the table ordered food except for the 11-year-old boy. She thought that was strange, but the dad explained that the boy was going to eat at home later.

She let it go at first, but then she noticed that the boy had bruises on his arms and face. She also noticed a scratch between his eyebrows. She knew something was wrong and that she needed to do something to help.

During a news conference, Carvalho explained, “Couple of minutes later, I saw a bruise on the side of his eye. So I felt there was something really wrong.”

Obviously she couldn’t just ask the boy in front of his parents if he was ok, so she wrote a note instead. She wrote “Do you need help? Ok” on a piece of paper and stood behind the boy’s parents. Then she held it up so that the boy could see it without the parents seeing it. Watch the video below to learn what happened next.

The 11-year-old boy and a 4-year-old child were both removed from the abusive home. The 11-year-old received medical care for his injuries. Not only was he underweight, but he had to endure what police described as torture by his father, Timothy Wilson II. His mother, Kristen Swann admits to having known about the abuse and not stopping it or seeking help for her son.

Wilson has been arrested for 3rd Degree Child abuse. Swann was also arrested for Aggravated Child Abuse and Child Neglect.

The owner of Mrs. Potato Restaurant is very proud of Carvalho for her heroic actions. She explained, “We are extremely proud. This has to encourage people that if you see something, say something.”
