Disney Has Just Announced Plans to Release a Filmed Version of the Lin-Manual Miranda Musical ‘Hamilton’
On February 3rd, Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted that The Walt Disney Company would be releasing a filmed version of “Hamilton” in movie theaters in October 2021. While that seemed exciting at the time, that is also a long time away.

In an extraordinary and unexpected move, Disney has now decided to release the film directly to their streaming service, Disney+, on July 3rd, 2020, just in time for the 4th of July celebration!

We’re not sure what the 4th of July will look like yet this year. Will there be fireworks and parades? We don’t know. What we do know is that we will have something very patriotic to watch on Disney+.
The film version of the Broadway musical was filmed just two weeks before the original cast ended their run. Before Broadway went dark, theater goers were paying $500 a seat to see “Hamilton” on stage. There are also touring companies in London and San Francisco. Other touring companies were set to start in Germany, Australia and Los Angeles, but COVID-19 but a hold on those plans.
Robert A. Iger, Executive Chairman of The Walt Disney Company, said in a statement, “In light of the extraordinary challenges facing our world, this story about leadership, tenacity, hope, love and the power of people to unite against the forces of adversity is both relevant and impactful. We are thrilled to bring this phenomenon to Disney+ on the eve of Independence Day, and we have the brilliant Lin-Manuel Miranda and the team behind ‘Hamilton’ to thank for allowing us to do so more than a year before planned.”
