Chris Rock’s Mom Has Broken Her Silence Following Will Smith Oscars Slap

It’s been about a month since the 94th Oscars ceremony aired on March 27, 2022—and since Will Smith punched Chris Rock right in the face.

In case you missed it, Smith got up from his seat and punched host Chris Rock square in the face after he made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

Right before presenting the award for best documentary, Rock joked, “Jada, I love you. ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ can’t wait to see it.” He was referencing the actress’s recently shaved head, which she had to do during her recent alopecia journey and severe hair loss. Smith then proceeded to walk onto the stage and punch Rock hard in the face. When he got back to his seat, he screamed at a confused Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out your f*cking mouth.” The incident went viral immediately, sending a wave of disbelief across the globe—and people certainly have their opinions about it. Some people think Smith was out of his mind, and some justify his actions as defending his wife.

However, most of the people giving their opinions don’t personally know these people. So what do we think a family member—say Chris Rock’s own mother—thought of the incident? He is, after all, someone’s son! And if someone were to hurt your son, how would you feel?

His mother, Rose, has recently spoken out about it, and said how much it, of course, did hurt her. “I told someone, when Will slapped Chris, he slapped all of us, but he really slapped me,” Rose told North Carolina NBC affiliate WIS 10 News. “When you hurt my child, you hurt me.”

Roe, 77, also said that Rock is “still processing” the incident this long later, but that in the moment, she was “really, really proud” with how he reacted to it in front of a live audience. Let’s not forget that he had to continue on hosting the awards as if nothing happened—which he did pretty well!

She also has some choice words for Will Smith himself. “I have no idea what I would say other than, ‘What in the world were you thinking?’ she said. “Chris could have stepped back and fallen. You really could have gotten taken out in handcuffs. You didn’t think.”
