Chick-Fil-A Manager Called In to Help With Vaccine Drive-Thru Backup

It’s well known that the food at Chick-fil-A is so delicious that there is often a very long line at the drive-thru. It is also well-known that even though the drive-thru line may be super long, that doesn’t mean you’ll have to wait a long time to get your food.

Unlike many other fast food establishments, Chick-fil-A has the drive-thru line down to a science. It’s a common sight to see employees standing outside taking orders and directing traffic, always with a smile and a positive attitude.

Now that the COVID-19 vaccine is available to not only healthcare workers and first responders but also senior citizens, lines for the vaccine are getting longer, and we can only assume that these lines will get even longer as the vaccine opens up to more and more people.

Recently, a drive-thru vaccine clinic was set up in a small town in South Carolina. That sounds like a great idea, and it was except for one thing. The computer system went down, and hundreds of people were waiting in line in their cars an hour or more just to get the vaccine.

Will Haynie, the mayor of Mount Pleasant, decided to call in some reinforcements to help get the line moving faster. He didn’t call the hospital or the police department. He called Jerry Walkowiak, the manager of a local Chick-fil-A.

Haynie told CNN that Walkowiak was able to quickly figure out why the line was moving so slowly. He explained, “After he looked it over, he said, ‘There’s your problem right there. It’s backed up because you have one person checking people in.’ Then he showed us how to do it right.”

It might sound odd or even funny to recruit a fast food franchise manger to help with drive-thru vaccinations, but it actually makes a lot of sense. Walkowaik has obviously had a lot of experience handling long lines at his Chick-fil-A location, so of course he would know what to do to speed up the line.

Walkowaik could’ve said no. He couldn’t said he was too busy to help, but he didn’t. He said yes. He showed up, and he worked the Chick-fil-A magic on the drive-thru vaccine line. Instead of waiting in line for over an hour, people ended up waiting only about 15 minutes.

Walkowiak told news station WCBD, “At Chick-fil-A, we’re about being the most caring company in the world, and when Mayor Haynie asked us to come over, we took a look at what was their drive-thru system. We saw a little hiccup in their drive-thru system, and we needed some more people, so we gathered some of the wonderful Rotary volunteers and went down there and just was able to expedite the registration part.”

He makes it sound so easy, because to a Chick-fil-A manager, a long line is a simple problem to solve.

Does it surprise you that a mayor would call a Chick-fil-A manager to help speed up a long vaccine drive-thru line? Does it surprise you that it worked? Do you think more vaccine drive-thru locations should turn to Chick-fil-A managers for help?
