Mom Shocked By 6-Year-Old Daughter’s Sexist Homework and Her Rewrite Goes Viral

When one mother read over her six-year-old daughter’s homework assignment, she couldn’t believe her eyes. For what was a seemingly harmless worksheet asking students to fill in a missing word, Lynne Polvino, the mother, was completely outraged.

“I was already feeling pretty frazzled, and when I read the assignment, I almost lost it,” Polvino said of the worksheet.

The assignment was titled “Back to Work” and featured a short narrative of a mother having to go back to work after maternity leave. There were some pretty sexist statements, such as a man not being able to cook a good breakfast and the wife having to do the dishes after. In fact, the entire story felt pretty outdated and just plain odd.

On top of helping her with her homework, Lisa’s mother decided to rewrite the story to make it, well, a bit more modern.

Take a look at the original assignment below:

Now you see why Lisa was so annoyed, right?

“It just pushed so many buttons for me,” Polvino said. “And with each sentence it managed to get worse! My shock and dismay quickly turned to outrage. I mean, what decade are we in, anyway? In this day and age, we’re going to tell kids that mothers working outside the home make their children and families unhappy? That fathers don’t normally do things like cook and wash the dishes?”

Now, take a look at the new version that Lisa re-wrote:

Much better, if we do say so ourselves.

Lisa says her new version is “to reflect the kind of world I want to live in, the kind of world I want my kids to live in when they’re old enough to have jobs and families.”

Not only did the teacher agree that the assignment was outdated and said she’d review these assignments more carefully, social media followers also agreed with Lisa, and loved her new version.

“Absolutely brilliant work,” someone wrote. “Congratulations for tackling this so creatively and leading by example. I love the extra details.”

“Wow, this is fantastic,” someone else write. “Thank you for the boost this afternoon, I work full time and have two small kids. My husband (their stepdad) is full time Dad right now. Goodbye old stereotypes. The world has changed.”

Of course, there were also some people who didn’t see any issues with the original assignment.

“I really think the assignment was not bad,” someone wrote. “The girl in the assignment was just sad because she missed her mom; it was a change in routine.”

Do you think the assignment was outdated or do you not think of it as a big deal?
