We doubt you’ve ever seen anything like this before! You’ve seen videos of humans giving birth – it’s beautiful and scary and awe-inspiring all at once. But we doubt you’ve ever seen a shark’s birth! We know we certainly haven’t seen anything like this before, and we’re completely amazed! Truly, when this shark egg is cut open before our very eyes, we were shocked. This is truly an incredible sight, even though it’s not at all what we were expecting. Watch the video below to see with your own eyes this live shark birth.

Why was this person cutting open a shark egg with regular kitchen scissors, you ask? Good question. It does seem like kind of a weird thing. Trust us, it’s about as unexpected as you can get.

This ocean life enthusiast owns a salt water aquarium, in which he tends to a variety of diverse wildlife. His newest purchase was this unborn bamboo shark.

Also known as the Whitespotted bamboo shark, this mostly nocturnal species is found in the coral reefs in the Pacific Ocean and is completely harmless to humans – which is a reassuring thing to keep in mind after watching the video above. Because the bamboo shark is so harmless, it’s a pretty commonly unique sea creature to have in an at-home aquarium.

It’s not like having a gold fish or a beta fish, but a lot of sea life enthusiasts like this egg owner might be expected to have a specimen like this.

Bamboo sharks can grow to be up to three feet long, which means that this guy must have one long tank. Another fun fact about this species? The female bamboo sharks can lay eggs without being impregnated, and they’re one of the only creatures on earth that can boast this skill.

He was told when the egg reached a certain size (this size, we’re assuming), to cut the egg open with a pair of scissors. We wonder if he was expecting this to happen! We definitely were not.

First, the egg has to be completely submerged under water. Then, the egg owner uses a pair of scissors to cut the initial opening, which has to be cleared up a bit more with the blade; it was stuck closed by some internal fluid.

After clearing the opening, nothing was happening, so the owner’s friends encourage him to make a deeper cut. (Is anyone else secretly worried he may cut the shark? Just me?) He makes a deeper cut and pressed the egg so that it pops open, creating a gap from which his sea creature could escape.

There’s a few tense seconds – and then all of a sudden, a black and white flash comes darting out of the egg! So fast, almost aggressively, the baby bamboo shark whips around the plastic container.

The owner and his friends are so excited to see the shark is alive and well. The owner himself is even yelling, “He’s swimming! He’s swimming!” as the shark bursts from the egg.
