How to Make Waffle Iron Fried Cheese

There’s nothing like a good mozzarella stick, and now when the craving strikes, you can easily make up a batch using your waffle iron. Once you try this recipe, you’ll definitely add it to your list of favorite unconventional things to make with your handy dandy waffle iron. Check out the recipe we found over at Serious Eats:

Here’s what you need to make 4 servings:

-3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
-1/2 teaspoon paprika, or a pinch of cayenne pepper
-1/2 pound low-moisture mozzarella, sliced about 1/2 inch thick (you can also use any other good melting cheese, like provolone, fontina, Jack or cheddar)
-2 large eggs, beaten
-1/2 cup bread crumbs
-Nonstick cooking spray
-Salsa or marinara, for serving (optional)

Here’s what you do:

  1. Preheat your waffle iron to medium
  2. Mix together the flour and paprika or cayenne on a plate. Then in a second bowl, place the eggs. And on a third plate, lay out the breadcrumbs. One slice at a time, bring the cheese down the assembly line. First coat each slice in flour, then egg, then breadcrumbs.
  3. Spray both sides of the waffle iron with nonstick spray, then place as many cheese slices as will fit in the iron. Close lid and cook until breadcrumbs turn golden brown (should take about a minute). Repeat with remaining cheese.
  4. Serve with salsa or marinara sauce and enjoy!
