How to Fix Cracks in Drywall

Drywall cracks are not only unsightly, but they’re impossible to paint over! If you’re looking to repaint your walls, you’ll need to make sure they’re as smooth as possible before you do anything. Not interested in hiring someone to fix the cracks in your drywall? No problem! You can learn how to do it yourself with this helpful tutorial from MonkeySee.

The most typical place to see cracks in drywall is above doorways and windows, which is the natural result of a house settling into its foundation over the years. Unfortunately, this is also one of the most noticeable places for a crack to occur.

Luckily, this tutorial makes it easy for you to cover up this crack as if it never existed! Here’s what you’ll need to repair your drywall:

  • Masking tape
  • Utility knife/screwdriver
  • Damp cloth
  • Self-adhesive fiberglass mesh tape
  • Drywall joint compound

Begin by masking off the cracked area so you know where to stop when you’re cutting into the wall and painting. Next, you’ll use something pointed to break into the drywall crack; utility knives, screwdrivers, or old church keys are suggested in the video, but anything you have will do. You’ll be cutting down through the crack to widen it, with the intent of exposing drywall on both sides of the break.

Then you’ll want to cover the crack from top to bottom with self-adhesive fiberglass mesh tape to join the crack together and prevent it from splitting open in the future. The following steps will ensure that the crack doesn’t just stay together, but it looks like it never came apart! You’ll have to watch the quick, helpful video below to get the full directions, however.
