Puppies come in a variety of different colors, but we bet you didn’t know that their touchable fur could closely mimic a hue found in a Crayola box. That’s right, one little puppy out there has actually been born with a hair color that so many trendy gals pay money to sport themselves—pastel green!

Now, we’re sure that you’re most likely scratching your head right now. We agree, the idea of a GREEN puppy being born into this world seems rather unlikely, to say the least. Though this doggy’s color may raise more than a few suspicions, it is not as uncommon as you may think.

But, before we dive into the hard science of how an unexpected event like this could happen in the first place, let’s meet this fur baby!

Her name is Fifi and she is a happy, healthy puppy with four playful brothers. The puppy’s namesake is, appropriately, Fiona, the princess from Shrek who shares her unusual tone.

C’mon, tell us you don’t see the resemblance!

It’s interesting to note that Fifi’s mom Millie is anything but green. She’s simply your standard, 2-year-old chocolate lab. And, though she gave birth to a litter of mostly yellow-colored boy pups, she loves her only daughter just the same.

We are guessing that this rare occurrence has most likely left you with some (or a lot!) of questions. Well, don’t worry, we won’t leave you hanging! Here is a little “green doggy FAQ” to help you wrap your head around how a healthy dog could exhibit such an extraordinary color.

1. How on earth is this puppy green anyways?

   Let’s begin with the basics, shall we? Little Fifi is green, not because she’s envious or has a belly ache, but because she was simply exposed to a substance called biliverdin, which is found in the mother dog’s placenta.

   The phenomenon may actually be more common than you may think, but it’s generally masked when dogs are born with dark fur. Because Fifi is a bit of a “towhead” the green tinge has just been extra apparent on her.

2. Will she be green forever?

   Sadly, no. According to her human parents, Elaine and Mark Cooper, that bright green color that the sweet pup was born with is fading by the day.

3. What color will she be?

   As of now, it looks like Fifi is taking on that familiar, whitish-yellow fur that her four brothers share.

4. Can it happen in humans, too?!

   Not exactly. Overexposure to biliverdin seems to happen just in dogs, but we do have the substance in our bodies as well. If you think about it, our skin does turn green sometimes—like when we get bruised, for instance. That greenish halo that forms around swelling is actually the same thing that made Fifi green.
