Is there anybody out there who doesn’t start their day with a cup – or two, or three – of coffee? (And if you do— how do you manage?!) All things considered, it’s not terrible for your health, and there are even some great benefits to drinking some joe. There are benefits, that is, until you start dumping in the cream and sugar, and even artificial sweeteners aren’t much better. What’s a caffeine-addict who can’t take her coffee black to do? Swap out your sugar and cream for a spice that packs a punch of flavor and health: cinnamon!
One study found just half a teaspoon of cinnamon per day can significantly reduce blood sugar levels, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol levels in people with type 2 diabetes . But for those who don’t have to worry so seriously about insulin levels, cinnamon has also been shown to have many other benefits.
Those benefits include strengthening your immune system, boosting brain function, and squashing cravings! While, as Greatist points out, the studies are still in development and verification stages, we know that we should all be cutting down on sugar, so why not give cinnamon a try? Even if you’re just swapping it out occasionally, you’re giving your body a break and taking your tongue for an adventure! It takes just a teaspoon to open up a world of coffee possibilities.
