Bug-Fighting Foods

Looking to soothe bug bite irritation? Or maybe you’re looking to prevent those annoying bites in the first place? There are some common foods that can help you out. Reader’s Digest has come up with a great list of some foods that can be used as natural protection against pests, or at least natural remedies if they’ve already gotten you. Take a look at some of them:

  • Garlic: start eating a clove or two of garlic everyday several days before you go camping or hiking. The garlic odor that you sweat out will repel mosquitoes.
  • Milk: mix together one part powdered milk, two parts water and a pinch or two of salt and rub on a bug bite to neutralize venom and provide soothing relief. This also works for painful sunburns!
  • Vegetable Oil: bird baths can be a nice haven for interesting birds, but they can also be breeding grounds for pesky mosquitoes. Float a few tablespoons of vegetable oil on the surface of the water. It won’t bother the birds and it will help keep mosquitoes away. Don’t forget to change the water twice a week.
  • Vanilla: people love the smell of vanilla, but bugs, apparently, don’t. Mix 1 tablespoon vanilla extract with 1 cup of water and wipe on skin to discourage mosquitoes, black flies and ticks.
