Every carpet needs a good, thorough cleaning every now and then. The good news is that you may not need to purchase a separate cleaning solution that’s specifically meant for cleaning carpets. Try some of these tricks from wikiHow for cleaning your carpet with other cleaners you may already have hanging around your home:

  1. Detergent Based Cleaning Solution: mix 1/4 tsp. of detergent with 1 cup of water. This solution can be used in a carpet cleaning machine or scrubbed into carpet with a rag or sponge. Then you should easily be able to vacuum up residue after carpet is dry.
  2. Household Cleaner Based Cleaning Solution: mix together 1/2 cup of any all-purpose household cleaner without bleach, 1/2 cup of fabric softener, 1 cup of ammonia and 1 gallon of warm water. Then use this (either in a carpet cleaning machine or scrubbed in with rag or sponge) to clean and soften your carpet.
  3. Spot Removers: you can try either of these 2 methods. Mix equal parts vinegar and baking soda until you form a thick paste. Dilute this mixture with warm water until mixture becomes a thin liquid and scrub it into the stain with an old toothbrush or sponge. You could also try pouring club soda directly to the stain and letting it sit for 3 to 5 minutes. Then scrub out stain with an old toothbrush or sponge.
