6 DIY Toothpaste and Mouthwash Recipes

Looking to save a little money on your trips to the drug store? You can definitely bypass the mouth care section if you have a few simple ingredients at home already. Check out some homemade toothpaste and mouthwash recipes that you can mix up on the cheap:

Mint Mouthwash

Mouthwash is usually made of alcohol, but you don’t need alcohol to freshen your breath. Try this mint mouthwash that you can make out of cheap ingredients:

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin
  • 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel
  • 10 drops of peppermint, wintergreen or spearmint essential oil
  • 1 1/2 cups of water

Here’s what you do:

  • Mix together all of your ingredients in a clean jar.
  • Use the mint mouthwash to gargle with.
  • Store the mouthwash in a jar with a tightly sealed lid. This should keep indefinitely.

Regular Herbal Toothpaste

Here’s what you’ll need for this simple recipe:

  • 6 tablespoons baking soda
  • Water
  • 20 drops of tea tree essential oil
  • 20 drops peppermint or spearmint essential oil

And here’s what you do:

  • Mix the baking soda with just enough water to make a paste in a small bowl.
  • Add the essential oils to the mixture and mix well.
  • Use daily. This mixture will keep for several days.

Toothache Treatment

If you have a rough toothache, try this solution until you can get yourself to the dentist:

Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • 4 tablespoons powdered ginger
  • 4 tablespoons cayenne pepper
  • Water

Here’s what you do:

  • Mix up the powdered ginger and cayenne pepper with enough water to form a paste.
  • Put this mixture on a cloth or cotton ball and apply it directly to the tooth that’s causing you pain. Try to keep the paste off of your gums and tongue.
