5 Things Babies Just Don’t Need

When you’re getting ready to have a new baby, it can be tempting to buy into the baby buzz created by retailers. There are all kinds of baby items and contraptions, some unnecessary and some just downright crazy (like pacifier wipes – really?!), but in reality you can do without most of them. Here are some things that Get Rich Slowly thinks you can just skip:
  1. Diaper Genie: instead of investing in a diaper genie that holds diapers in a bedroom, just keep a small trashcan in the room that can be emptied frequently. Or walk the diapers to the regular trashcan. No genie necessary.
  2. A Changing Table: this can come in handy if you actually use it and maybe have back or joint problems that prevent you from sitting on the ground easily. But otherwise, the floor with a changing pad works just fine for babies. According to Get Rick Slowly:

Actually, I think the floor makes a much better changing table since there’s no chance of your baby falling off the side. But since baby furniture manufacturers can’t sell you your own floor, they created baby changing tables. Hint: You don’t have to buy one.

  3. A Bigger House: a lot of people will buy a bigger house when they find out they’re having kids. But the truth is there’s no rush. Babies aren’t mobile for a while, so a smaller place is probably still just fine. You won’t want to rush into buying a house if the price isn’t right. Give yourself the time you need in order to move up to a bigger place and you’re more likely to save money.
  4. Designer Baby Clothes: baby clothes are super cute, but there’s not much else that depreciates faster.

I’m ashamed to admit that I bought tiny dresses with delicate embroidery, authentic-looking miniature baby loafers, and coordinating outfits with matching shirts, pants, leg warmers, and hats. However, paying $40 or $50 for a pint-sized outfit is rarely a good idea, especially when a similar outfit can be found at a garage sale or on eBay for a fraction of the price.

  5. Baby Bedding Set: your baby will need a bed, a sheet and some blankets. They won’t need a matching comforter, trashcan and cooridinating light switch covers.
