Debra Hunter was shopping in Pier 1 with her kids in June of 2020 she lost her temper and was caught on video intentionally coughing on a customer with cancer.

Known as the “Pier 1 cougher, Hunter has been receiving hate mail and threats since the incident, and now her life is about to get even worse.

Hunter has just been sentenced to 30 days in jail. Additionally, she will have to pay a $500 fine as well as serve six months of probation and participate in a mental health evaluation along with anger management.

Investigators say that the the victim, Heather Sprague, started to record the argument Hunter was having with an employee. Hunter got angry when she saw she was being filmed and reacted by giving her the middle finger and then walking up close to her and coughing on her.

The incident occurred in June 2020 and Hunter has since made it public that she regrets how she reacted.

“Admittedly I was immediately infuriated and demanded this customer to stop filming my kids,” she explained in a letter to the judge. “In the heat of the moment, I overreacted in an over protective manner which ultimately led to my retaliation on this stranger, the victim. And that highly regrettable, split second, knee jerk reaction has cost my family dearly.”

Since the incident, Hunter and her husband have endured quite the bit of hate, on top of losing all of their belongings in an unrelated house fire.

“It was like air being inflated into a balloon, and it finally got to the point where she couldn’t handle any more air,” Hunter’s husband said in court. “And then she finally rubbed up against something and just popped.”

Hunter says she was really just trying to protect her kids from a stranger filming them. She’s also made statements about how her kids’ lives have been turned upside down, in addition to her own.

But Duval County Court Judge James Ruth says he wishes she focused a bit more on the harm she could’ve done to the victim and now just how her actions affected her family.

“Her children didn’t create this problem and her husband didn’t, and she talked about how it changed her world and she was getting nastygrams on Facebook and things of that nature and they can’t go to their country club or wherever,” Ruth said. “But I have yet to see any expression, or a significant expression on her regret about the impact it had on the victim in this case!”
