A woman in Bangladesh gave birth to three children within one month. Arifa Sultana, a 20-year-old who was born with two wombs, had a boy in February and a set of twins weeks later. They were born on March 22.

Doctors were unable to detect two separate pregnancies because Sultana did not have an ultrasound prior to the first birth. Weeks after having her son, she sought care at a hospital due to abdominal pain, and an ultrasound was performed. It was then discovered that she was pregnant with twins – a boy and a girl.

Sultana has uterus didelphys, a rare condition where a woman develops two separate uteruses. OB-GYN Dr. S. Basu in New Delhi explained that typically, the uterus is formed from two tubes that fuse together. When that process is incomplete, a divided or double uterus can develop.

In some cases, the female may also have two cervixes and/or two vaginas. Many women do not know they have the condition, but some symptoms appear as heavy menstrual bleeding or premature labor.

Sultana’s twins were delivered via emergency C-section and all babies and mom are doing well. Sultana and her husband – who live in a rural area – are concerned about how they will care for three babies at one time, but they are grateful there were no health complications. The family was allowed to go home this week.
