Will Smith Issues a Public Apology to Chris Rock After Oscars Slap

Before heading to the Oscars on Sunday night, Will Smith posted a short video of himself and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, on Instagram. In the video, they were all dressed up and ready to go to the awards show. He captioned the video, “Me ‘n @jadapinkettsmith got all dressed up to choose chaos.”

And create chaos they did. When Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage during the awards show, everyone watching was in shock. Then he followed up the smack with profanity and left Rock speechless for a moment. All because he couldn’t take a joke.

The joke was about Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. Perhaps Rock shouldn’t have gone there since her hair loss is due to a medical condition; however, violence is never the answer.

Shortly after the slap, Smith won the award for Best Actor. He cried during his acceptance speech and apologized to the Academy and to the other nominees, but he failed to apologize to Rock. Now, he has finally apologized.

On Monday, Smith wrote a public apology to Rock stating, “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Although Rock is not planning to press charges against Smith, that does not mean that Smith is off the hook. The Academy says there could still be consequences, and they have started an investigation. Watch the video below for more details.

Do you think Rock was out of line to make a joke about Pinkett Smith’s hair loss? What consequences do you think Smith should face for slapping Rock? Do you think Smith’s apology was sincere? Why do you think Rock isn’t pressing charges against Smith?
