The United States of America is just that—a united bunch of united and diverse groups of people. That means, across all 50 states, lives people of various different cultures, heritages and skin colors.
As it turns out, some states have more of one race than another. For example, there are quite a few states where many white people are located. And if you ever wondered where the whitest states were, career company Zippia recently compiled the data for us.
Using the most recent ACS Census, Zippia divided the total population by the number people who identified as “One race, white.” The ones with the highest percentage were deemed the states with the most white people.
According to the data they found, behold: Below are the 10 whitest states in the country:
- Maine
- Vermont
- West Virginia
- New Hampshire
- Wyoming
- Iowa
- Idaho
- Montana
- Nebraska
- Kentucky
Maine came in with a whopping 94.3% of white people, following by Vermont trailing a close second with 94.2%. West Virginia was just over a full down below that, with 93.1%, and New Hampshire had 92.9%. Wyoming was down to 91.4%, Iowa and Idaho tied with 90% on the dot, and Montana had 88.5%. Nebraska and Kentucky were neck in neck, with 87.1% and 87% respectfully.
On that same note, below are the 10 LEAST whitest states—aka the ones with the least amount of white people currently living.

- Maryland
- Mississippi
- Georgia
- California
- Louisiana
- New York
- Alaska
- Nevada
- South Carolina
Hawaii has just 25% of white people—who knew? That’s by far the lowest, with it jumping to Maryland at 55.5%. Mississippi contains 58.4%, Georgia is at 58.6%, and California is at 59.7%. Making it into the 60s is Louisiana at 62%, New York at 63.7%, Alaska at 64.6%, Nevada at 65.6% and South Carolina at 67.2%.

Zippia does lots of experiments like these. For example, they were able to determine which states have the most and least debt, which food each state is known for, and even how much a gallon of milk costs in each state (who knew it differed so much?).
