Winter Olympic sports like ice-skating and skiing are sports that many people have done, but not all sports are as easy to try for fun. Take bobsledding. Sure, we have gone down a hill in a little sled, but a bobsled track is something entirely different. 

Have you ever watched the Olympic bobsled events and wondered what it would be like to go down that track? If so, you can finally come really close to doing just that, and you don’t even have to battle snow and ice. Instead, you can relax and take in beautiful scenery.

Mt. Van Hoevenberg in New York State is the site of the 1932 and 1980 Olympic bobsled track. A rollercoaster track has recently been installed alongside the bobsled track, and thrill-seekers can strap in and take their hands at the track.

Individuals are in control of the speed as they twist and turn down the 1.4 mile track. Go as fast or as slow as you would like. 

This new attraction is named the Cliffside Mountain Coaster, and it is the longest mountain coaster in all of North America. Sounds like it’s worth the drive!

In a statement, Mike Pratt, the Olympic Regional Development Authority President & CEO, said, “The coaster follows the alignment of the 1932 & 1980 Olympic Bobsled track as it descends the mountain. The views are amazing, and the curves get your heart pounding.”

The Cliffside Mountain Coaster is only open Friday through Sunday from 11am to 4pm. A ticket for one driver is $55, and a ticket for one driver plus a passenger between the ages of 3 and 12 is $65.

In a statement, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said, “The Cliffside Coaster is one of our latest and most thrilling additions to the Olympic Regional Development Authority venues, and part of our ongoing effort to modernize the entire Mt. Van Hoevenberg complex.”

New York State wants to make the Lake Placid area a year-round destination not just a winter destination, and they are spending over $240 million to make that happen. Besides the coaster, there is also a zipline, cross-country biking, a gondola and indoor skeleton and bobsled start track.
