2.4 Millions Pounds of Taquitos Are Being Recalled Due to Salmonella and Listeria Concerns
Bad news for taquito lovers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has just issued a recall on approximately 2,490,593 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry taquitos by Ruiz Food Products, Inc.
The recall is due to possible salmonella and listeria contamination in the diced onions used in the production of their beef and cheese taquitos.
Check your fridge for the following recalled products—and then get rid of them ASAP (either thrown away or returned to your grocery store):
- 5-lbs. cardboard cases containing 24-count Go-Go Taquitos “Beef Taco & Cheese Taquitos” with a case code 86183 printed on the label.
- 5-lbs. cardboard cases containing 24-count Go-Go Taquitos “Buffalo Style Cooked Glazed Chicken Taquitos” with a case code 86006 printed on the label.
- 5-lbs. cardboard cases containing 24-count Go-Go Taquitos “Chipotle Chicken Wrapped in A Battered Flour Tortilla” with a case code 86019 printed on the label.
These taquitos have production dates from July 1 through Oct. 10, 2018. They have the numbers “17523A or P-17523A” and “45694 or P-45694” in the USDA mark of inspection.
Salmonella can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, while listeria may induce muscle aches, headaches, confusion, balance problems, and convulsions. The elderly or those with weakened immune systems, pregnant women, and babies are most affected.
Currently, there have been no confirmed reports of illness or reactions from the recalled products, though if you show signs of illness after consuming products, the USDA urges you to seek medical assistance immediately. Salmonella and listeria can cause very serious foodborne diseases.
This recall comes after a slew of many recalls on various food products we’ve seen lately—from ready-to-eat ham to ground beef and even cereal. This year alone, the CDC reported multiple outbreaks of Listeria, E. coli, salmonella, and other infectious pathogens.
