When you’re 90 years old, there are a lot of things you’re unfortunately just not able to do. Sometimes it’s cooking for yourself, or cleaning for yourself. Sometimes it’s even the ability to get dressed on your own.

For Agnes Maples, it was the inability to lift heavy objects and repair some pretty extensive damage to her home. It wouldn’t have been the worst thing in the world if it wasn’t costing her up to $2,500 in fines a day—but it was.

You see, one of Agnes’ family members had been storing his belongings and extensive amount of trash at her home for years. Since she’s 90 years old and has lived alone since she’s been a widow, there was nothing she could really do about it. It got so bad, the neighbors finally complained, and the city was forced to fine her.

Still, the family member wasn’t budging on removing the trash—and Agnes wasn’t physically capable of doing so. “I tried to get him to get it out. It was terrible. All kinds of garbage,” Agnes said.

In addition to all the smelly trash, Agnes’ home was basically starting to fall apart. There were holes in the roof and a lack of air conditioning in the bedroom, both of which were not conducive to good health for someone of Agnes’ age and health. Agnes was pretty much at her breaking point.

“My roof had gotten bad and there was animals getting in,” she said. I didn’t know what to do. I wasn’t able to do it and I know I couldn’t do it.“

She finally decided to reach out to Operation Blessing, a nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating human need and suffering around the world.

“Along with our faithful supporters, we put a special emphasis on not only providing physical relief to those in immediate need, but also equipping them with new knowledge to create sustainable solutions to combat poverty,” the company writes on their website.

Operation Blessing was quick to begin helping Agnes in cleaning out her home as well as repairing her roof for her—and Agnes appreciated it more than anything. “They’re angels,” she said. “They came in and cleaned out all the stuff, tore the shed down and tore the trailer down and taken everything out.”

Not only did they do the bare minimum of what she needed (which was already a lot), they also threw in building her a new pathway to her backyard, adding some flower beds to her garden, removing the debris that lay outside her home, and cleaning out her entire shed.

“They started working and they sure did do a good job,” says Agnes. “And they’re all my little angels. And I never will forget them. And I love them.”
