Let’s be honest. When Meghan Markle married Prince Harry it appeared as if her life was changing more than his was. She moved to England. She shut down her social media presence. She gave up acting. Oh, how times have changed. Now, it appears as if Prince Harry has given up everything including the title “Prince.”
There are still 5 more weeks before Meghan and Harry will officially no longer be working as senior royals, but Harry has already made it clear that he no longer wants to be called Prince.
Recently, at a speaking event in Scotland, Harry made it clear that he did not want to be referred to as Prince Harry but just Harry. Before Harry walked on stage, the conference host, Ayesha Hazarika, announced, “He’s made it clear that we are all just to call him Harry, so ladies and gentlemen, please give a big, warm Scottish welcome to Harry.”
Even though Harry doesn’t want to be called Prince Harry anymore, he will still officially retain the title. It’s his birthright. Harry and Meghan will also retain the titles the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the Earl and Countess of Dumbarton (a Scottish title) and Baron and Baroness Kilkeel (a Northern Ireland title). They just won’t be using the titles anymore.
One title they will not be able to use after Megxit is Sussex Royal. The couple was planning on using this title as their brand, but The Queen won’t have it. A statement released by the couple reads, “While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ or any iteration of the word ‘Royal’ in any territory (either within the UK or otherwise) when the transition occurs Spring 2020.”
March 9th is most likely going to be Harry and Meghan’s last official day working as senior royals. Along with The Queen, they will be attending the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey.
