If you’re going through a rough time, you may have turned to music to help you cope. For whatever reason, music can truly heal the soul. There’s a song for each mood, a genre for each emotion. Even celebrities aren’t immune to the benefits of a good tune.

Singer Kelly Clarkson recently shared that there’s one song in particular that has helped her deal with a rough time in her life: Her divorce from her estranged husband Brandon Blackstock. The two filed for divorce back in June after being married for seven years.

That song? “The Dance,” by country singer Garth Brooks.

Clarkson sat down with Brooks on a recent episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show to explain why the song really hit home for her. She said that while she’s been reading a bunch of self-help books and accepting gifts and help from loved ones, it was hard for her to really feel all that she was feeling.

“I couldn’t quite nail down the feeling,” she said. “I was, like, well, you don’t want to crap on it. Like, you don’t want to say that didn’t count or matter, but you don’t know what to put in it because it didn’t work out how you wanted and so, anyway, I kid you not, I was listening to my playlist and ‘The Dance’ came on and I was like, ‘No, that’s the thing. That’s it.’”

The tendency to help someone going through something like a divorce is to trash the other person—but Clarkson didn’t think that was the answer. In her heart, she felt that in the moment, and in those seven years, things were right. But along the way, the two just went on different paths—but does that mean those should all be neglected? Probably not.

The Dance is a truly beautiful song that you can listen to here. Who knows, it might even help you too, if you’re going through a rough time!

“I think a lot of people that go through such a devastating [thing], there’s a lot of grief and a lot of loss and change, especially when you have kids,” Clarkson continued. “All of the books were helpful, but it’s so funny, I guess because I’m a musician, but I was listening to ‘The Dance’… [and] I got the point.”
