Jodi Doering is a nurse in South Dakota, and she works with COVID-19 patients. Recently, on a day off work, she took to Twitter to vent about her job. What seems to be most stressful to her is the attitude of some of her patients.

“I have a night off from the hospital. As I’m on my couch with my dog I can’t help but think of the Covid patients the last few days. The ones that stick out are those who still don’t believe the virus is real”

Doering shared that even when patients come into the hospital and receive a positive test result for COVID-19, they still don’t believe they have the virus. Even when they are dying, they believe they must have something else. They still think they’ll be okay, and they refuse to believe the virus that is killing them even exists.

“They tell you there must be another reason they are sick. They call you names and ask why you have to wear all that “stuff” because they don’t have COViD because it’s not real. Yes. This really happens. And I can’t stop thinking about it. These people really think this isn’t going to happen to them. And then they stop yelling at you when they get intubated.”

Doering wants people to take COVID-19 seriously and to know that it is in fact very real. It’s frustrating to her when people are near the end and turn down her offer of calling their friends or family so they can talk to them one more time. They often turn her down saying they’ll be alright when she knows that’s not the case.

It’s sad to think that there are people dying who turn down the opportunity to say goodbye to their loved ones all because they refuse to believe what the doctors and nurses tell them. We can only imagine how upsetting this must be for Doering and the people she works with.
