‘Secret Santa’ Quietly Pays Off $29,000 in Layaway Items at a Pennsylvania Walmart
The holiday season is truly the most wonderful time of year. Besides all the fun things that come along with it—like baking cookies, decorating the tree, playing in the snow, and caroling, everyone is just constantly in a jolly good mood.
We’re not going to lie, while it’s super fun to open presents, finally getting the Nest doorbell you’ve been dying for (or whatever you asked for this year), we know deep down the season is really about giving over receiving. That’s actually what makes us happy.
For lots of people, one of the most fun ways to “give” is by playing Secret Santa, fun tradition to make gift-giving easier for a group of people. You play by drawing names out of a hat, and then buying the person you chose gift you know they’ll love.
Well what if you decided to ditch the name-out-of-a-hot idea and just buy gifts more hundreds of people who might not be able to comfortably afford to do so?
The thing is, not everyone’s financial situation lends them to being able to give presents to others that easily. But that’s why layaway was invented, a system that allows you to buy an item and set up a payment plan so that you can gradually pay it off when you can afford to do so.
Walmart is one of the major stores out there that participates in its own layaway system, allowing their customers to participate between early September and mid-December.
Well one very generous human decided that it wasn’t fair that some people have to put gifts on layaway. And they decided to do something about it.
This person recently walked into a Walmart Supercenter in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania and decided to pay off every single item that was on file for layaway in the store, just so whoever the gifts were for could have a happy holiday season (as well as the person who put it there in the first place)
The total? It came to $29,000.
This man truly took “Secret Santa” to a whole new level. Even crazier is that the person is choosing to remain anonymous. So we know they didn’t’ do it for the fame. It truly is the season of selfless giving, people!
“When customers quietly pay off others’ layaway items, we’re reminded how good people can be. We’re honored to be a small part of these random acts of kindness,” Walmart said in a statement.
While this is a wonderful deed, this isn’t the first time an anonymous someone has paid off Walmart’s layaway around the holidays. In 2015, several different “Secret Santas” spent around $500,000 to cover layaway purchases in Walmarts in three different states.
Additionally, another anonymous “Santa” did the same thing at a Long Island Walmart. Check out the video below to hear about it.
