In her 2010 memoir, “Bedwetter,” Sarah Silverman credited her dad with giving her her sense of humor. She also said that he was the one who taught her how to swear.

Now, Sarah is announcing the sad news that her father, Donald Silverman, has died. It was not necessarily an expected death, but it doesn’t seem like it was shocking to Sarah either. In a post on Instagram she claimed that “he wanted to be with his love, Janice, who we lost last Monday.”

Janice was Sarah’s step-mother. She and Donald had been married for 40 years. It seems that Sarah believes that her father’s grief over his wife’s death made him lose his will to live.

In her post on Instagram, Sarah shared multiple pictures of herself with her father. In the caption, she explained, “My best pal, Schleppy – my dad, died last night. All the sisters, and grandkids surrounded him with love and singing and very dark f***ed up jokes this final week.”

Sarah added that if anyone feels moved to give something, they should “donate to @2ndnurture” which is a non-profit organization started by her sister, Susan Silverman. According to the non-profit’s website, Susan founded the organization ins 2017 and was inspired to do so “After discussing fostering and adoption with hundreds of people in dozens of cities in the US and Canada.” The organization’s “mission is to radically increase the number of families who choose to foster and adopt waiting children and teens, and do so successfully.”

Many people responded to Sarah’s sad news with condolences and well wishes for the family. Actress Elizabeth Banks wrote, “So so sorry for your loss. Sending love.”

Actress Alison Brie commented, “I’m so sorry for your loss. Love to you and your family.”

Comedian Chelsea Handler wrote, “You had the best dad. Funny, smart, kind and a human good doer. I will miss you, popsicle.”

Rest in peace.
