Tina Turner is considered the Queen of Rock ‘n Roll for her hit songs including “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and “Proud Mary.” Unfortunately, we have learned the sad news that Turner has died. She was 83 years old. According to her manager, Bernard Doherty, Turner died after “a long illness.” She died on Wednesday May 24, 2023, at her home in Küsnacht, near Zurich, Switzerland. She was a Swiss citizen.

The sad news was also announced on Turner’s Instagram account. The post reads, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”

Turner’s birth name was Anna Mae Bullock. She gained the last name Turner after marrying her first husband, Ike Turner. He also came up with what would become her stage name, Tina Turner.

Turner had previously opened up about how abusive her first marriage was. She ended up escaping the marriage while on tour with her husband. He beat her up, and she ran away, thankfully being allowed to stay at a motel free of charge by a compassionate motel manager.

Although Turner had multiple hit songs, “What’s Love Got to Do with It” was one of her biggest hits, and she almost didn’t record it. She originally thought it sounded too much like a pop song, but she ended up agreeing to sing it with her take on how to sing the vocals.

Turner won 12 Grammys during her career, three of them for “What’s Love Got to Do with It.” In 2021, she was inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame.

Turner previously suffered from kidney disease. She ended up getting a kidney donation from her second husband, Erwin Bach, whom she married in 2013.
