Queen Elizabeth II Just Shared Her Very First Instagram Post at Age 92

Guys, something really, REALLY incredible just happened on Instagram: Queen Elizabeth II just published her first-ever post! That’s right, the 92-year-old British royal actually took to the ever-popular social media platform on March 7th to share a snapshot of a letter from the Royal Archives written by her great-great-grandfather, Prince Albert.

Along with the photo, the Queen of England also included a caption explaining the significance behind her sharing this particular post. As it turns out, she wasn’t just digging through the Royal Archives one night, feeling nostalgiac, HRH had just gotten through with an enriching day at the Science Museum and wanted to share with the world how far technology, particularly, computer technology, has come in the almost 200 years since the letter was written.

Today, as I visit the Science Museum I was interested to discover a letter from the Royal Archives, written in 1843 to my great-great-grandfather Prince Albert.  Charles Babbage, credited as the world’s first computer pioneer, designed the “Difference Engine”, of which Prince Albert had the opportunity to see a prototype in July 1843.  In the letter, Babbage told Queen Victoria and Prince Albert about his invention the “Analytical Engine” upon which the first computer programmes were created by Ada Lovelace, a daughter of Lord Byron.  Today, I had the pleasure of learning about children’s computer coding initiatives and it seems fitting to me that I publish this Instagram post, at the Science Museum which has long championed technology, innovation and inspired the next generation of inventors. The post, which was published in the Royal Family’s Instagram account is quite on-brand for the Queen. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s not a duck-lipped selfie (though that would be hilarious!) or a funny photo of her beloved corgis, instead, it’s a sweet shoutout to her family, as well as Britain’s scientific community, present and past.

Classy, indeed!

Now, it should be noted that this is not Queen Elizabeth II’s first foray into the engrossing world that is social media. Back in 2014, she actually published her first tweet to The Royal Family Twitter account. Amazingly, the tweet was ALSO about the Science Museum, too. Who knew she was so into the subject??

We’re so happy to see that the Queen is taking part in the social media revolution. Perhaps her participation will stop the despicable, trollish behavior that’s being thrown at her younger family members. Nothing like the presence of a queen to keep everyone in line!

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this historic social media post! Are you surprised that the Queen is now on Instagram? Do you think it will last? Which other royals should join social media?
