On Wednesday January 17, 2024, Kensington Palace’s official Instagram account broke some shocking news about Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales. She is in the hospital.

In the statement from the Prince and Princess of Wales official Instagram account, the royal family shares that the princess “was admitted to the hospital yesterday for planned abdominal surgery.” The announcement did not include information about why she needed to have the surgery, but it sounds quite serious since she is expected to have a lengthy recovery period both in the hospital and upon returning home.

The statement shared, “The surgery was successful and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days.” Once she is released from the hospital, she will continue her recovery at home and is not expecting to make any public appearances “until after Easter.”

Many people who commented on the post found the length of the hospital stay slightly alarming. One comment reads, “Wow 10 to 14 days in hospital??? That’s long.”

The palace realized this announcement would raise “interest” and they shared, “The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.”

According to a source that spoke to TODAY, the reason for the surgery had nothing to do with cancer, so while we don’t know what issue she is dealing with, it’s not cancer. The source also shared that Prince William is also not planning to make any public appearances while his wife recovers in the hospital and later at home.

The Princess of Wales celebrated her 42nd birthday just one week ago, and The Royal Family’s official instagram page shared a picture of her at her father-in-law’s coronation in honor of her birthday. However, she has not been seen in public since Christmas when she and her husband and children attended church at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene.
